Over the past two decades, Scotland has built up substantial capabilities across several areas of space technology, including small satellite manufacturing, rocket and launch vehicle manufacturing, vertical launch, data analysis, and Earth observation.
Scottish technology has already played a role in major space missions, contributing to Mars exploration and deep space observation via the James Webb Space Telescope. The country is now positioning itself to become the next major commercial space launch nation, with multiple spaceports currently developing launch facilities. This gives investors access to a connected range of space services from a single location, alongside the kind of low-risk conditions well suited to reaching low Earth orbit.
A world leader in space data and research
Scotland has also established itself as a world leader in space data analysis and research, with its space industry frequently generating or supplying data used to tackle challenges on a global scale. Satellite data originating from Scotland has been used to track elephant migration patterns, classify more than 240 billion trees, and monitor biodiversity loss and gas levels worldwide.
Driving sustainability in the space sector
Alongside these capabilities, Scotland is using research to actively reduce the environmental footprint of its space industry. The Scottish Government recently published the Scottish Space Sustainability Roadmap, described as a world-first strategy for building a sustainable space sector. The roadmap sets out a target to cut space industry emissions by 50% by 2030, with a longer-term goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2045.
A number of initiatives across Scotland’s space sector are already contributing to this sustainability push, including the development of green rocket fuels and ongoing research into reducing space junk.
