ByteDance Founder Zhang Yiming Becomes Asia’s Richest Person at 105 Billion Dollars

Zhang Yiming, the founder of ByteDance, has become the richest person in Asia, with a fortune valued at 105.5 billion dollars. The milestone puts the low-profile Chinese entrepreneur ahead of Indian industrialist Gautam Adani, who had held the region’s top spot. Zhang’s rise has been rapid, and much of it has come in a matter of weeks rather than years.

His net worth climbed by about 12 billion dollars in September alone and has grown by roughly 92 billion since 2019. The latest surge followed fresh valuations of ByteDance from large asset managers, including BlackRock and Fidelity, which raised their estimates of what the privately held company is worth. Zhang owns close to 21 percent of ByteDance, so shifts in its valuation move his personal fortune sharply.

ByteDance is the parent of TikTok and its Chinese counterpart Douyin, two of the most widely used short video platforms in the world. TikTok alone counts more than 1 billion daily active users. The company has remained private, which means its value is set through periodic assessments and internal share transactions rather than a public stock price.

Analysts point to the company’s push into artificial intelligence as a central reason for the jump. ByteDance uses the vast stream of data generated by TikTok and Douyin to train advanced AI models, a resource that has become one of its most valuable assets. That work has helped reshape how investors view the company’s long-term prospects.

“He plays his cards right,” said Lian Jye Su, chief analyst at the research firm Omdia. “He stayed on course and then continued to double down on AI investment.” Zhang stepped back from day-to-day leadership of ByteDance several years ago but retains his large ownership stake. His climb to the top of Asia’s wealth rankings underscores how the race to build AI is redrawing the map of the world’s largest fortunes.
