Meet The 15-Year-Old Scientist Shaping The Future of Renewable Energy

As renewable energy sources expand to address an expected 50 percent increase in global energy demand by 2050, Areej Al-Qarni creates new solutions for sustainable power generation. The 15-year-old researcher has published over 110 research papers and developed new anti-soiling coatings for solar panels.

While watching a documentary about solar power in Riyadh, Al-Qarni discovered her passion for renewable energy research. “I realized that the solutions we need are right before us,” she says. This moment led to her work developing advanced materials for solar technology and shaping environmental policy.

Advancing Environmental Engineering

Al-Qarni’s silicon dioxide nanostructured coating for solar cells tackles a significant challenge, which is a dust accumulation in arid regions. This technology improves solar panel efficiency, with particular benefits for Saudi Arabia and similar desert environments.

“We need to make renewable energy not just viable but optimal,” Al-Qarni says. “We are solving technical issues and creating solutions that work globally.” Her research earned her the Grand Award at the 2024 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). She now collaborates with Harvard, MIT, and KAUST.

Her work combines scientific research with real-world applications. “She sees the bigger picture,” says MIT’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Lab researcher. “She is a problem-solver.”

Science and Global Policy Integration

Al-Qarni speaks at the Misk Global Forum and serves as a TED Fellow. She promotes collaboration between scientific research and policy development. Her work with the United Nations emphasizes the need for international cooperation in sustainable technology.

“Science alone is not enough,” she says. “We need policies supporting innovation and equitable access to sustainable technologies.” Her certification from McKinsey & Company strengthens her ability to influence discussions about renewable energy and sustainability.

Her nonprofit organization mentors young scientists and supports innovation in underrepresented communities. “Leadership means creating opportunities for others,” Al-Qarni says. “The more diverse voices we have, the more effective our solutions will be.”

Al-Qarni’s work inspires young people worldwide to pursue careers in science and technology. She plans to study Environmental Engineering and International Politics and Economics, combining technical knowledge with policy expertise to advance sustainable development. This combination helps create practical solutions while ensuring widespread access to new technologies.

Her 2025 Global Recognition Award recognized Al-Qarni for contributing to environmental engineering and renewable energy development and acknowledged her role in developing practical solutions for environmental challenges.
