Actress Turned Founder Raises Early Backing for Moroccan Beauty Brand MoroMaa

MoroMaa, a beauty and personal care brand built around Moroccan ingredients, has raised Rs 1.5 crore in early-stage funding from AJ VC, the firm run by investor Aviral Bhatnagar. The agreement gives the fund a stake of about 9 percent in the company. It is a modest sum next to larger consumer rounds, but it lands as an early sign of confidence in a label that only began selling to shoppers in the middle of the year.

The brand is led by Soundous Moufakir, who runs it as sole founder and chief executive. She came to cosmetics from finance and entertainment rather than from the beauty trade, holding an MBA in finance alongside a career in acting. Moufakir has said she wants to introduce Indian buyers to what she calls “M Beauty,” a category she frames around Moroccan beauty rituals and ingredients brought in directly from Morocco. The idea is to give the products a clear point of origin in a crowded market.

MoroMaa launched at the end of June, and Moufakir has said two of its products sold out within the first couple of months on sale. Those early results, though small in scale, helped make the case to investors that the brand could find a steady audience. The company sells directly to consumers and has focused on building recognition for its Moroccan sourcing rather than competing on price alone in a category dominated by larger players.

Bhatnagar said the decision to back the company rested on the founder herself, pointing to her mix of product knowledge, distribution experience and firsthand understanding of Moroccan beauty. The fresh capital is earmarked for widening the product range, strengthening the way MoroMaa reaches customers and spending more on making its Moroccan positioning known. The plan keeps the brand’s spending close to product and distribution rather than heavy marketing at this stage.

India’s beauty market has drawn a wave of founder-led, direct-to-consumer labels in recent years, many of them betting on a single ingredient story or heritage to stand out. MoroMaa is trying to carve out its own space with a Moroccan identity and a founder willing to front the brand publicly. Whether the category she describes takes hold will depend on repeat buyers, and the company said the funding gives it room to find out.
